Our Mission Statement

EcoHimal, a non-profit association and international non-governmental organization based in Salzburg, Austria, has been working with local grassroots groups in the Hindu Kush-Himalayan region since 1992. Our development projects are highly participatory, primarily oriented towards the UN Sustainable Development Goals and the proven principles of international development cooperation.

Our projects in Nepal are implemented by EcoHimal Nepal, a national NGO registered with the Social Welfare Council in Kathmandu. Projects in Kyrgyzstan are implemented by our partner organization Agents of Changes, a registered national NGO based in Bishkek.

Project funding is provided by foundations, government institutions, the European Union, business partners, sponsors and private donors.

To enable the people of the Hindu Kush-Himalayas to enjoy better living conditions, by supporting them in taking the sustainable development of their regions into their own hands – that is EcoHimal's mission.

The fight against poverty and the protection of biodiversity in order to guarantee the long-term reasonable coexistence of man and nature – these should be central to any development cooperation. All our projects pursue social, humanitarian, ecological, economic and cultural objectives, which are realized together with the local people in regional development projects.

Our integrative project concept focuses on five main areas:

  • poverty reduction, income generation and appropriate infrastructure
  • gender-sensitive health care and education
  • biodiversity conservation and agroforestry
  • sustainable regional and tourism development
  • preservation of cultural heritage.
