Gender friendly educational project with Help Alliance

Learning from the positive experiences in school reconstruction projects with Lufthansa Help Alliance, the social service division of the airline is financing the construction of three new schools. They replace the old ones which were totally destroyed during the quakes in 2015. For a rather long period there was no secure place for the school children and they had to study unsafely in cracked and fragile buildings or in temporary shelters made of bamboo and corrugated roof sheets.

Beneficiars of this project are 601 school children (297 female and 304 male), 35 school teachers and staff members of three schools in Dudh Koshi Rural Municipality of Solukhumbu district.

Education is the pivotal objective of this project, but access to safe drinking water, adequate sanitation and appropriate hygiene are also basic needs and a right of children. The project has therefore a specific focus on sexual and reproductive health (ASRH) components. In the remote rural areas, school girls have been suffering from unhygienic facilities and cultural beliefs. Adolescent girls often lack appropriate information on menstrual hygiene management which has direct impact on adolescent girls‘ schooling: absenteeism of menstruating girls is directly affecting girls’ academic progress.
